We first stroll to the great square which was once the Byzantine Hippodrome, where chariot races took place. The Hippodrome exhibits the Walled Column, the Serpent Column, and the Egyptian Obelisque from the Byzantine times. We will continue to the Mısır Çarşısı (Egyptian Bazaar) constructed in the 1660s. Western travellers referred to it as the Spice Market because of the spices from Arabia, India and Far East brought here being loaded on to vessels in Egypt (there was no Suez Channel at the time). After lunch we will visit the Underground Cistern (Basilica Cistern). Built in AD 532 by Emperor Justinian, is the largest surviving Byzantine cistern in Istanbul. Water still drips through the ceiling since then.
